How to Clean Your Home After Summer: Where to Start
At Kiriko, we know your home needs a different kind of clean once summer winds down. It’s not the same as everyday mess: there’s sand turning up in impossible corners, limescale building up after weeks of extra showers, and beach clothes that have been waiting their turn in the laundry basket for a while now. That’s why we like to break this clean-up into manageable parts, in an order that actually makes sense — no need to set aside an entire weekend for it.
Where to start
We recommend organising the clean-up by area, prioritising the ones you use every day and that get dirty again fastest if left for last:
- Floors.
- Bathroom.
- Kitchen.
- Tile grout.
- Windows and blinds.
- Summer clothing and textiles.
If you’re short on time, tackling just the first three — floors, bathroom and kitchen — already makes a noticeable difference.
Floors: the first thing to get dirty, and the first thing you’ll notice clean
Sand, sunscreen and garden or terrace dirt build up in corners and under furniture all summer long. If you clean with a robot vacuum, this is a good moment to check the filter and the dust container, since a summer of fine sand clogs it up faster than usual. For particularly grubby tile or terrazzo floors, a floor cleaner with good degreasing power helps lift that sticky residue left behind by sunscreen and sweat.
The bathroom, a little more patience
The bathroom is usually where summer shows the most: more showers, more hot water and, as a result, more limescale. For light limescale, vinegar can help, though it’s worth knowing it falls short once the build-up has had several weeks to set in. In those cases, a dedicated descaler tends to work better, and for tougher limescale or grout with stubborn staining, a well-diluted hydrochloric acid cleaner, used with good ventilation, is the option that actually dissolves the problem rather than just masking it. One important note: bleach, ammonia and hydrochloric acid cleaners should never be mixed together.
Tile grout
It’s the corner everyone leaves for last, but it’s also the one that changes the overall look of a bathroom or kitchen the most. Summer humidity — from the pool, the beach, extra steam in the shower — makes mould spots more likely to appear in the grout lines. A dedicated grout cleaner, applied with a stiff-bristled brush and left to work for a few minutes before rinsing, helps restore the original white without redoing the tiling.
The kitchen, with summer’s built-up grease
Barbecue trays and tools always end up back in the kitchen, and their burnt-on grease takes more effort to shift than an ordinary day’s mess. The same goes for melted ice cream drips on the counter or oil stains from frying, both more common in summer. For this kind of set-in grease, we recommend a spray degreaser: it’s applied directly and doesn’t need much scrubbing. If the hob or oven have gone a few weeks without a clean, let it sit for ten minutes before wiping it off.
Windows and blinds
Summer dust, combined with the humidity of warmer nights, leaves a haze on windows that isn’t always obvious until the sun hits them directly. An ammonia-based glass cleaner, applied in criss-cross motions with a microfibre cloth, helps avoid streaks and leaves glass without a trace.
Summer clothing, before it goes back in the wardrobe
Swimwear, beach towels and technical sportswear worn outdoors shouldn’t go straight into the wardrobe without a proper wash: pool chlorine and sea salt can weaken fibres if left unwashed for too long. For this kind of clothing, we recommend a detergent designed for sports or technical fabrics, which is gentler on elastic and better at removing that lingering damp smell than a standard wash. A fabric softener at the end of the cycle also helps keep towels from feeling rough after their last summer use.
Heading into September with the house one step ahead
You don’t need a magazine-perfect home to know it’s properly clean. With the right product for each task and a sensible order between rooms, the return to the September routine can start with the house already sorted, instead of leaving it all for the last weekend. At Kiriko, we’re here to help with every home clean-up — whether it’s the everyday kind or the one that comes after every summer.
